What is Pythagorean numerology?

The numerology of Pythagoras explained: the letter chart, core numbers and how to calculate it free.

Pythagorean numerology, also called the numerology of Pythagoras, is a system that gives every letter of the alphabet a value from 1 to 9 and reduces dates to a single digit (or a master number). From a person's full name and date of birth it derives a handful of numbers — Life Path, Expression, Soul and others — that are read as personality traits, talents and challenges.

It is named after the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras of Samos (c. 570 – c. 495 BC), for whom the numbers 1 to 9 stood for universal principles. The modern method was systematized in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is a symbolic tradition of self-knowledge, not a science.

The Pythagorean chart: the value of each letter

Letters are laid out in rows of nine: A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; and so on up to I and R, which are 9.

NumberLetters
1A · J · S
2B · K · T
3C · L · U
4D · M · V
5E · N · W
6F · O · X
7G · P · Y
8H · Q · Z
9I · R

Accented vowels count as the plain vowel (Á = A, É = E, Ü = U…), Ñ counts as N and Ç as C. The vowels are A, E, I, O and U; Y is always a consonant and is worth 7. Hyphens, apostrophes and other marks don't count.

The 5 core numbers

Life Path

Comes from the full date of birth: add all its digits and reduce the result. It's the central number of the chart and describes life's overall direction.

Expression

The sum of every letter in your full birth name. It speaks of talents and the way you act in the world.

Soul

The sum of the vowels in the name only. It represents inner desires and motivations.

Personality

The sum of the consonants in the name only. It shows the image you project to others.

Personal Year

Birth day and month plus the current year, reduced. It changes every year and sets the theme of the current cycle.

Master numbers 11, 22 and 33

When reducing a sum, the digits are added until you reach a number from 1 to 9. The exception is 11, 22 and 33: when they appear, they are kept as they are. These are the master numbers, read as more intense versions of 2, 4 and 6. Example: 29 → 2 + 9 = 11, and it stops there.

How is it different from astrology, horoscopes and tarot?

  • Astrology: uses the position of the planets at the time and place of birth, so it needs the hour and the city. Pythagorean numerology uses only the name and the date.
  • Horoscopes: general forecasts by sun sign, the same for everyone born under that sign. In numerology, the numbers are calculated from each person's own name and date.
  • Tarot: relies on cards drawn at each reading, so the result changes from one spread to the next. In numerology, the same name and date always give the same numbers.
